The centre of Bratislava is also referred to as the Staré Mesto or the Old Town (134m above sea level, population 44800). It became the district of Bratislava I in 1996 and its area 9,6 square kilometres makes it the smallest one of Slovakia. It is simultaneously the most densely populated district (4790 inhabitants per square km). The Old Town includes the historic core of the city and adjacent quarters, originally medieval suburbs. The eastern part of the Old Town is flat and covered by dense urban fabric. The western part lies on the hills with greater part of urban greenerycompared to the rest of the city. The southern limit of the Old Town coincides with the channel of the Danube.
